My interest in Autism: I have a thirteen year old son, Paul, who has moderate Autism and severe learning difficulties. He was diagnosed at four years of age as the result of a pilot scheme being run in Homefirst at the time. (Which our branch part funded). I consider him very lucky to have been a part of the scheme and I have always been grateful that he was chosen. His diagnosis wasn't something I didn't already know, but it was a sign post to the services he required. It also proved to family and friends that there was something wrong and it wasn't all in my head!
Role/History: When I joined the East Antrim Branch, there were very few regular members. It wasn't long before I found myself elected Secretary, then a couple of years after that, Chairperson. A role I have had since then. I became a councillor for the branch and then I was asked to join the board. Lately I was appointed Vice Chairperson along with David Heatley.
Other Interests/Hobbies: I have been a Brownie Guider for 23 years, so that keeps me occupied! I find it fun, a challenge at times, but it keeps me young and up to date with the latest trends. Bratz are very big at the moment! Brownie night coincides with our board meetings, so I am often late, but the other members are very tolerant!
I have a diploma in Reflexology and Indian Head massage and I have done a course in Counselling and computers. I am also a member of Hill Croft School P.T.A.
To relax, I enjoy yoga and swimming and a glass of wine (or two) when I watch Casualty on a Saturday night!
Vision for Autism: I would like some research done on the apparent increase in Autism. I would also like to see a general increase in funding for services, therapists, respite care etc. I would also like the public to be more understanding of the difficulties autistic people have. I could go on all day!
My vision for Autism NI, PAPA - I think we have done a brilliant job of promoting Autism and long may we continue to do that! I welcome the call for a Northern Ireland specific Autism Strategy and this should be our main focus, so that people with Autism in this country, get the support they deserve. I believe that we should continue our excellent training package so that we can reach as many people as possible, parents and professionals. We need to keep ourselves focussed on the road ahead, it will be long and winding, but I believe we will achieve our goals in the end if we all work together.
