Mandatory Training For All Teaching Staff

After three long years of campaigning from local charity Autism NI, the Minister for Education Peter Weir has agreed to introduce mandatory autism training for all teachers and classroom assistants throughout Northern Ireland. This was the first debate within the Chamber to take place since the reinstatement of the Assembly in 2020.

Currently 1 in 30 children are being diagnosed with autism in Northern Ireland, it is critical that our children are given the support they are entitled to at school. We want them to have the best possible start in life and the best educational outcomes. No child with autism should miss out on a full and supportive education.

Many of our teachers in Northern Ireland feel overwhelmed with the lack of training and resources they are given to teach autistic children. We are therefore calling for the Department of Education to introduce mandatory autism training for all teaching staff within mainstream schools.

Autism NI has been consistently lobbying for this over the past three years and change is URGENTLY NEEDED.

Getting Involved

If you don’t ask, you don’t get! Well, campaigning is just about many people asking once they realise there is a common problem, issue or cause that has a consensus of opinion on a solution, remedy or redress.

The “getting involved” idea means working together, not just for one child or adult with Autism – but for all and for future generations. Now, that’s a campaign!

Since Autism NI was formed in 1990, parents and dedicated professionals have led the way at every stage in developing decent services for children and adults with ASD.

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." — Margaret Mead
